Maureen McCormick on the Faith That Carried Her Marriage Through Addiction

Behind Marcia Brady’s easy smile was a young woman quietly unraveling. Maureen McCormick faced addiction and despair in the years after childhood fame, far removed from her wholesome on-screen image. Then, one glimpse of a stranger at a concert sparked an unshakable conviction. She felt certain, somehow, that this man would become her husbandThat certainty didn’t arrive with easy answers. The quiet pursuit that followed would test both of them, as her private struggles threatened the very future she felt so sure of that night, long before the two of them could build the life she’d imagined together.

Life After Marcia Brady
McCormick became a household name playing Marcia on The Brady Bunch, but when the show ended, the spotlight gave way to something darker. She struggled with cocaine addiction, depression, and bulimia, fighting battles far removed from the wholesome image fans knew.

A Chance Encounter and a Growing Faith
Meeting Michael Cummings opened a different chapter. She first noticed him at a concert, and something about the moment convinced her he would one day be her husband. Rather than approach him directly, she began attending his Bible studies and sitting near him at church, slowly building a connection.

That quiet persistence led to a first date, and the relationship quickly deepened into an intense romance. Cummings later said she had been honest with him about her past from the very beginning, holding nothing back as their bond grew.

Testing Their Love
Honesty didn’t make the relationship easy. McCormick has described pushing Cummings away during periods when her addiction took hold. He remained committed, choosing to work through their problems rather than walk away.

Treatment and personal growth became turning points for McCormick, and their shared faith gave the relationship a foundation sturdy enough to withstand the hardest stretches of her recovery.

Building a Lasting Marriage
The couple welcomed a child in 1989, a milestone that marked a new stability in their life together. From there, their marriage continued to grow, eventually spanning 37 years.

In her memoir, McCormick credited their faith with sustaining their love through its most difficult seasons. It was that shared belief, she wrote, that helped them trust the relationship was real, resilient, and worth protecting even when everything else felt uncertain.
