Which Hotel Room Items You Can Keep — And Which Will Cost You

…an unexpected line on your final bill. Knowing which items are fair game and which ones will cost you can save both money and an awkward conversation at checkout.

What You’re Free to Keep
Travel-sized toiletries, disposable slippers, and branded pens or notepads are typically considered complimentary, especially when they carry the hotel’s logo. Tea bags, coffee pods, sugar packets, and creamers usually fall into the same category.

If you’re ever unsure, or you notice a price list sitting near the minibar, it’s worth confirming with staff before packing anything away. A quick question up front is easier than a surprise on your invoice.

Items That Will Cost You
Larger or reusable items almost always belong to the hotel’s inventory rather than the guest. Towels, pillows, blankets, hair dryers, kettles, irons, robes, artwork, and decorative objects are all part of the room’s furnishings.

Taking any of these home can trigger a replacement charge added to your final bill, even if the item seemed small or easy to overlook during packing.

The Minibar Trap
Minibar snacks and drinks are nearly always billable, sometimes automatically through sensors built into the minibar.

What to Do If You Slip Up
If you realize after checkout that you’ve accidentally packed something that wasn’t meant to leave the room, there’s no need to panic. Contacting the hotel and being honest about the mistake is usually all it takes to sort things out.

When in doubt during your stay, asking the front desk or checking the in-room guide is the simplest way to avoid the confusion altogether.

I didn’t cause a scene. I requested her records, pulled up my bank receipts, and found one detail that proved the whole thing had been planned from the beginning.
