Thirty-One Years on the Same Mattress
The bed had a deep valley worn into its middle and a faded gray cover marked by old stains layered like rings on a table. My mother waved off every suggestion to replace it, insisting it was fine because they only slept there.

I finally stopped arguing and quietly ordered a new mattress for a Saturday morning, paying extra to have the old one hauled away so there could be no debate about keeping it. The plan was simple: let the movers in while my parents spent a few hours at the beach.

The Call From the Movers
The morning went smoothly until my phone rang around one-thirty. The driver said they’d stopped working, that nothing was broken, but something had been found between the mattress and the base.

He asked how long my parents had owned the bed. When I said thirty-one years, his voice changed. He said they wouldn’t move or touch anything until I saw it myself, and that he’d wait the forty minutes it would take me to get there.

Come Alone
Then came the part that unsettled me most. The driver told me to come alone and warned me not to let my mother into the bedroom before I had looked first.

Across the table, my mother had already noticed something was wrong. The mover said something else, something specific enough that her face lost its color instantly. She stood, demanded the keys, and was gone within minutes, driving straight back toward the house.

What Had Been Hidden All Along
Beneath the mattress were hundreds of letters, old photographs, and a worn stuffed rabbit. They belonged to Grace, a sister I never knew existed, who had died of an illness at four years old, before I was born.

For thirty-one years, my mother had secretly written letters to Grace, tucking them beneath the mattress alongside her belongings. My father knew about the ritual but never disturbed it, letting it remain her private way of holding onto a grief she had never fully shared.

Once the secret was finally out, our family stopped avoiding Grace’s name. We talked about her, looked through the old photographs together, and let her memory become part of our lives again after decades of silence.
