Swift chose Kansas City.
But when cameras eventually found her inside a private suite, it was not only her decision to support her husband that had people talking.
Sitting right beside her was Tom Cruise.
Swift arrived at Arrowhead Stadium on September 14 to watch the Chiefs face the Denver Broncos, wearing a red-and-white checkered top that fit naturally with Kansas City’s colors.
It marked a notable return to the stadium following her July 3 wedding to Kelce at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
The newlyweds had maintained a comparatively low profile after their wedding, with Swift and Kelce most recently spotted together during a New York City dinner outing on September 6.
But there was little chance of Swift remaining unnoticed once she returned to Arrowhead.
She watched the action alongside members of the Kelce family, including Donna and Jason Kelce.
Then cameras revealed another famous member of the group.
Cruise was seated beside Swift in the VIP suite.
Photos showed the Mission: Impossible star watching the game alongside her, while broadcast footage captured the two talking during the first quarter.
For viewers who had not followed Swift and Cruise’s previous public interactions, the pairing seemed completely unexpected.
Social media immediately lit up.
Some people focused on Cruise’s appearance.
“Tom Cruise is starting to look like Jerry O’Connell,” one commenter wrote.
Another viewer paid more attention to the interaction between Cruise and Swift, joking, “Find you a wife that looks at you like T Swift looks at T Cruise.”
“They go to the same barber,” someone else quipped.
As often happens when Swift appears at a Chiefs game, other comments focused closely on her appearance.
“So much makeup at a game?” one person asked.
Another questioned why she appeared to be drinking during the game, while someone else speculated about whether her appearance had changed cosmetically.
But Cruise sitting beside Swift was arguably the more interesting detail.
Because despite how surprising the pairing might have looked, this was far from their first connection.
Cruise had already entered Swift’s orbit more than two years earlier.
On June 22, 2024, the actor attended Swift’s Eras Tour show at Wembley Stadium in London.
And he did not simply slip quietly into the VIP section.
Cruise embraced one of the tour’s most recognizable fan traditions by exchanging handmade friendship bracelets with concertgoers.
Videos from that night showed him enjoying the show alongside an unusually star-studded group.
Travis and Jason Kelce were there.
So were Greta Gerwig, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher and Liam Hemsworth.
One fan-recorded video showed Cruise smiling and moving along to “Shake It Off.”
Kelce could be seen standing behind him with his hands on the actor’s shoulders before leaning forward and saying something that made Cruise laugh.
Cruise then reached up and patted Kelce’s hand.
Jason danced nearby, while Gerwig joined in with the music.
At the time, it was simply another celebrity-filled Eras Tour moment.
In hindsight, it was the beginning of a more visible connection between Cruise and the couple.
The actor was later reportedly among the guests when Swift and Kelce married in New York City on July 3.
Sports broadcaster Joe Buck subsequently discussed meeting Cruise at the wedding during an appearance on the Rates & Barrels podcast.
For Buck, getting the opportunity to speak with the Hollywood star became one of the evening’s unexpected highlights.
“Being 57 years old, to get to talk to Tom Cruise for 20 minutes was better than any part of the entire night to me, other than watching them get married,” he said.
That history made Cruise’s seat beside Swift at Arrowhead considerably less random than it first appeared.
He had attended her tour.
He had publicly interacted with Kelce.
He had reportedly watched the couple get married.
And now he was sitting alongside Swift and the Kelce family as Travis began another NFL season.
Yet Cruise was only part of what made September 14 an unusual night for Swift.
At almost the same time she was watching football in Missouri, one of the biggest nights in television was unfolding in Los Angeles.
The 78th Emmy Awards were being held at the Peacock Theater, and Swift had a professional reason to pay close attention.
Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour — The Final Show had received five Emmy nominations.
Among them was Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), with Swift recognized for her involvement as a performer and supervising producer.
The special also received recognition in categories covering directing, picture editing, sound mixing, and technical direction and camerawork.
Its main category, however, had already been decided during the Creative Arts Emmys.
The Muppet Show, whose team included Swift’s friend Sabrina Carpenter as a performer and executive producer, took the award.
Still, Swift had hardly been a passive participant in the Emmy campaign surrounding her film.
In late August, she reportedly joined director Glenn Weiss and sound designer John Ross for an intimate Los Angeles event attended by roughly 50 Emmy voters.
The gathering was deliberately private.
Press, cameras and phones were reportedly prohibited.
Swift even sang during the event, although what she performed was not publicly revealed.
She also discussed the enormous challenge involved in filming the final Eras Tour concert while protecting the atmosphere that had made the live shows so distinctive.
For Swift, preserving the audience’s sense of freedom and escapism was crucial.
“One of the things that I was so impressed by, and the needle Glenn threaded so effortlessly, is that the Eras Tour was such a phenomenon because of so many factors but one that I know that is really important is that it was a source of great escapism for the people who were there,” she said.
That meant the cameras could not become so intrusive that concertgoers suddenly felt as though they were participating in a film shoot instead of experiencing the Eras Tour.
