My Swimming Pool Was Filled with Orbeez Until We Found What Was Hidden at the Bottom

The first thing I noticed was the color. Bright blue beads covered our patio and filled the swimming pool. Beneath millions of shimmering Orbeez sat a large sealed acrylic case. The pool cover we had secured the night before was folded neatly against the fence. Someone had entered our yard and left it there. This wasn’t a prank.

My husband Carmelo and I had spent three years searching for our son, Mason. He disappeared at the town summer festival when he was seven. He had brown hair, a gap between his front teeth, and an obsession with Orbeez. He used blue for loneliness, yellow for birthdays, red for emergencies, and green for secrets. He also carried a cracked yellow sand shovel.

We carefully cleared the pool with nets and buckets. When the case was lifted out, I saw the shovel inside. My hands began shaking. Detective Rios arrived with a rescue team, and they opened the case that afternoon.

Inside were Mason’s drawings, toys, friendship bracelets, festival crowns, and notes from children who had known him. There were also hundreds of Orbeez. Mrs. Lewis from the community center explained that after Mason disappeared, children had left gifts at a memorial table. Volunteers preserved everything, hoping someday we could have it.

Then I found the letters.

One child thanked Mason for sharing his crayons. Another remembered that he called freckles “tiny stars.” A firefighter wrote that Mason had helped distribute water bottles during the festival and made everyone laugh. Each memory showed us something we had almost forgotten: Mason had been more than the boy who disappeared.

Then they showed me a photograph taken minutes before he vanished. Mason stood near the fountain, smiling and handing brightly colored Orbeez to other children. On the back, someone had written, “He made sure every child found the brightest one.”

For three years, I had pictured Mason’s last moment as the moment my hand became empty. Now I finally had another memory to hold. His last ordinary moment had been filled with kindness, laughter, and children gathered around him.

That evening, the pool was clear again. I kept one blue Orbeez inside the crack of Mason’s yellow shovel and placed them beside his school photograph. I still didn’t know where my son was or what had happened to him, but for the first time in three years, our home held something besides grief. It held proof that Mason had been deeply loved—and that his light had never disappeared.
