His Brooklyn appearance was for an entirely different project: Lizard Music, an adaptation of Daniel Pinkwater’s children’s novel. In it, Johnson plays Chicken Man, an eccentric elderly man who forms a bond with a young boy named Victor, played by Theo Clark Leber.
Speaking to Deadline at D23 in August 2026, Johnson explained that bringing the character to life wasn’t just about losing weight. It also meant five hours in the makeup chair every single day to convincingly appear as a man in his 70s.
“This is that thing that I ran towards and chased the challenge, and this was a challenge for me,” he said of taking on the part.

Once the Brooklyn set photos began circulating, reactions poured in fast. Many viewers said they struggled to connect the slimmer, older figure on screen with the Dwayne Johnson they knew.

For Lizard Music, Johnson is reuniting with director Benny Safdie, who also directed him in The Smashing Machine, the drama centered on MMA fighter Mark Kerr. Johnson has said it took Safdie only about 45 minutes to convince him to sign on for the new project.
The film’s cast extends well beyond its two leads. Alongside Johnson and Theo Clark Leber, Lizard Music features Alicia Silverstone, Regina Hall, and Andrew Dice Clay in live-action roles.
The voice cast adds even more star power, with Colman Domingo, Jeff Goldblum, Rachel McAdams, and David Krumholtz all set to lend their voices to the project.
