After helping a classmate conceal a facial scar before prom, the narrator discovered a passion for makeup. He became skilled at helping people with scars, birthmarks, and other visible differences feel confident. His father, however, considered makeup embarrassing and constantly compared him unfavorably to his athletic brother, Jake.

When he turned eighteen, his father gave him an ultimatum: throw away his makeup supplies or leave the house. He chose to leave. His mother cried, while Jake remained silent. His father even told him that living in the real world might finally “make a man” out of him.

Over the next decade, the narrator turned his passion into a successful career. He worked with women recovering from accidents, surgeries, and other experiences that affected their confidence. Meanwhile, he became distant from his family and rarely heard from them.

Then, after ten years, his father unexpectedly appeared at his apartment. He apologized and begged his son to come home. When the narrator reminded him that he had been thrown out, his father admitted he knew he had been wrong. Then he revealed that Jake had never contacted him about what had happened.

Instead, his father showed him a photograph connected to another painful family story. The photograph forced the narrator to confront a deeper truth about sacrifice, family, and the people whose contributions often go unnoticed.

The story then shifts to a young woman who became responsible for her younger brother after their mother died. At only nineteen, she abandoned her own dreams to raise him, working long hours so he could stay in school and eventually become a doctor.

After graduating, the brother became arrogant and cruelly told his sister that he had “climbed the ladder” while she had chosen an easy life and amounted to nothing. She quietly walked away and stopped contacting him.

Years later, he returned to their childhood home and finally understood what she had sacrificed. His education, career, and success had been built partly on the years she gave up for him. He realized too late that she had never taken the easy road—she had carried his.
