A driver once stopped to help a stranded man who had run out of money for fuel. Without expecting anything in return, he paid for the stranger’s gas so he could continue his journey. Before leaving, however, the grateful man handed him a small green carved object that the driver had never seen before.
The unusual item immediately sparked curiosity. Its shape resembled a traditional Chinese hulu, or gourd, which has long been associated with protection, health, longevity, and good fortune. The object appeared to be carved from green stone, possibly jade, although its exact material and value could not be determined from a photograph alone.
The gift may have had significant personal meaning to the stranger. It could have been a charm he had carried for years or something passed down through his family. Since he had little else to offer, giving away something meaningful may have been his way of expressing genuine gratitude.
The driver had simply chosen to help someone in need, expecting nothing in return. Instead, he left with a mysterious object and a memorable story that he would likely never forget.
Whether the carving was valuable in monetary terms is uncertain. Its real significance may have been the meaning attached to it by the person who gave it away.
The encounter is a reminder that kindness does not always return in obvious ways. Sometimes, a simple good deed leads to an unexpected gesture from a stranger, and the most meaningful gifts are not necessarily the ones with the highest price.
