My Son Had Been Walking Home Alone for Only 20 Minutes When My Neighbor Said, “Come Outside. You Need to See This”

“Come outside. You need to see what your son did.”

The moment I heard Ivy’s voice, my stomach dropped.

She sounded like she was crying.

For one terrifying second, every fear I had ever carried as a mother rushed through me at once.

“Is Joel okay?”

“Just come.”

I didn’t even put on shoesI ran outside in my socks.

And stopped.

My eleven-year-old son was sitting on the pavement.

Both knees were bleeding.

One palm was scraped raw.

His shirt was torn near the shoulder.

And in his arms was a little girl wearing pink pajamas.

She couldn’t have been more than four.

She was sobbing so hard she could barely breathe.

A delivery truck sat crooked in the street several yards away.

Its back doors were still open.

The driver sat on the curb with his face in his hands.

I ran toward Joel.

“Oh my God.”

He looked up.

“Mom, I’m okay.”

“You’re bleeding.”

“The girl’s okay.”

I dropped to my knees beside him.

“What happened?”

Joel looked toward the truck.

Then toward the little girl.

“She was behind it.”

I stared.

“What?”

“The truck was backing up.”

His voice shook.

“She came out from between the cars.”

I looked at the driver.

He was crying.

“I didn’t see her,” he said. “I swear to God, I didn’t see her.”

Joel continued.

“I yelled.”

My heart pounded.

“The driver didn’t hear me.”

“So what did you do?”

Joel looked almost confused by the question.

“I ran.”

He had sprinted into the street.

Grabbed the little girl.

And thrown himself toward the pavement, turning his body so she landed on top of him instead of beneath the truck.

The truck stopped only feet away.

I looked at my son.

My eleven-year-old son.

Skinny.

Still sleeping with one foot outside the blanket because he got too hot at night.

Still leaving cereal bowls in the sink even though I reminded him every morning.

Still asking whether monsters could technically exist in deep oceans.

He had just saved a child’s life.

I pulled him against me.

He winced.

“Mom.”

“Sorry.”

“It’s okay.”

I held him more carefully.

The little girl’s mother came running down the street seconds later.

Someone had called her.

When she saw her daughter, she screamed.

She dropped beside us and pulled the little girl into her arms.

Then she looked at Joel.

“You saved her.”

Joel looked down.

“I just ran.”

“No.”
