In February 2026, Szubanski delivered the news fans had been hoping for: she had completed chemotherapy and entered remission.
At the time, she described the development as a huge relief but made an important distinction.
Remission did not mean she had been cured.
Now, in a deeply personal interview with Tracy Grimshaw on 60 Minutes, Szubanski has explained what that uncertainty means for her future.
“The great news is I’m in deep remission from my cancer,” she said.
But she explained that the disease is considered an incurable relapsing cancer, meaning that despite currently being at bay, she has been told it is likely to return.
“So, it’s almost sure that it will come back,” Szubanski said. “It’s a question of ‘when’ and then ‘how bad?’”
Szubanski also discussed the prognosis she had been given, saying the median survival figure associated with her condition was around eight and a half years.
But she was careful to acknowledge the uncertainty surrounding such statistics.
“I could go less, or I could go more,” she said, adding with characteristic humor that she was “pitching for more.”
A median survival statistic describes outcomes across groups of patients and does not determine exactly how long one individual will live.
For Szubanski, however, knowing that the disease could return has changed the way she thinks about time and mortality.
She compared the experience to living with the “Sword of Damocles” hanging overhead, saying that while everyone knows life is finite, serious illness can make that awareness feel much less abstract.
Looking back at the period before her diagnosis, Szubanski recalled knowing that something was seriously wrong with her body.
She experienced profound fatigue and severe physical symptoms before doctors eventually discovered the cancer.
The actress said the feeling became so overwhelming that it followed her into her sleep.
She recalled waking during the night with an internal voice warning her that something was terribly wrong.
Those fears eventually led to the diagnosis of mantle cell lymphoma.
When Szubanski first publicly announced her illness in May 2025, she described the cancer as “very rare, very aggressive” and “very serious.”
Despite the frightening diagnosis, she remained hopeful, pointing to continuing advances in treatment and praising the medical professionals caring for her in Melbourne.
She began a chemotherapy regimen known as the Nordic protocol.
Treatment was difficult.
Szubanski has since described chemotherapy as physically brutal, while also stressing that she was able to get through it.
Her immune system was severely affected, something she continued warning supporters about even after announcing her remission.
When she revealed the good news in February, she specifically reminded fans that remission didn’t mean her health concerns had disappeared.
“It’s not a cure,” she explained at the time, expressing hope that the remission would keep the cancer at bay for a long time.
Despite everything she has endured, Szubanski has continued making public appearances.
At the 2026 Logie Awards in August, she appeared as her much-loved Kath & Kim character Sharon Strzelecki. ABC reported at the time that she remained in remission.
The appearance was especially meaningful given the extraordinary place Szubanski holds in Australian entertainment.
Her career stretches back decades, with television work including Fast Forward, Big Girl’s Blouse and, most famously, Kath & Kim.
Her portrayal of the lovable, unlucky-in-love Sharon Strzelecki became one of Australian television’s most recognizable comedy characters.
Szubanski has also appeared on the big screen, including as Esme Hoggett in the internationally successful film Babe.
In 2025, she was inducted into the Logies Hall of Fame, becoming only the fifth woman in more than four decades to receive the honor. She has won seven Logies during her career and was twice named Australia’s Most Popular Person on Television.
Cancer has also touched Szubanski’s family repeatedly, making her own diagnosis especially confronting.
During her recent interview, she reflected on serious illnesses experienced by several members of her family, while still finding moments to use the dark humor audiences have long associated with her.
That humor has remained present throughout her own illness.
Even when announcing her remission, Szubanski joked about false reports and misinformation surrounding her health before thanking supporters and her medical team for helping her through an extraordinarily difficult period.
For now, the most important fact is that Szubanski remains in remission.
She isn’t pretending that means the battle is permanently over.
Instead, she appears determined to live with both realities at once: gratitude that treatment has worked and an awareness that the cancer may eventually return.
And when confronted with a statistic suggesting what the future might hold, Magda Szubanski’s response captured the humor and determination that have followed her throughout her career.
