Born in Richmond, Virginia, MacLaine grew up with English and Scottish roots. Her mother, Kathlyn Corinne MacLean, was a drama teacher from Nova Scotia, and her father, Ira Owens Beaty, worked as a psychology professor and real estate agent.
As a girl, she trained in ballet at the Washington School of Ballet, standing out as the tallest student in her class. After finishing high school, she moved to New York to chase an acting career, a decision that would eventually lead to Hollywood.
Her body of work includes unforgettable turns in The Apartment, Steel Magnolias, Sweet Charity, and Turning Point. She earned six Academy Award nominations and took home the Oscar for Best Actress in 1984 for Terms of Endearment.

Still Active in Her 90s
MacLaine isn’t slowing her career down. According to Deadline, she is set to star in the upcoming film Margret and Stevie, which follows writer and illustrator Margret Rey during her later years.
The story reportedly explores how publishers attempt to reshape Rey’s legacy, and how an unexpected friendship with a companion named Stevie inspires her to protect her own narrative. It’s a role that continues MacLaine’s long history of portraying complex, independent women.
A Glimpse Into Her Everyday Life
Away from film sets, MacLaine has recently been photographed enjoying simple pleasures. On Monday, March 23, she was seen having lunch in Malibu, dressed in a mint green hoodie and black glasses, smiling for the camera while eating oysters and a beer, with a burrito also on the table.
It wasn’t her only recent outing. Back in January, she was spotted at the same hotel walking arm in arm with a male companion. Mint green appears to be a favorite color of hers, having also been photographed in a similar-toned T-shirt paired with khaki pants.

She has developed something of a routine at Kristy’s Malibu, a restaurant she’s visited multiple times, including twice within one month before an outing there in August 2024. The pattern suggests a woman who values familiar comforts and a relaxed pace when she isn’t working.
Her outings haven’t gone unnoticed by fans, who have filled comment sections with affection. One admirer called her “one of the last of the greats,” while another simply wrote, “Looking good for 91.”
Reflecting on the Facelift and Her Secret to Longevity
MacLaine has been candid about a facelift she had in her mid-50s. For much of her career, she said, her looks were beside the point, since her roles rarely traded on beauty.
That changed when Hollywood began offering her grandmother parts, roles that didn’t match how she saw herself. She had the facelift and, at first, was pleased, even enjoying moments spent admiring her reflection.
Over time, though, she came to feel the change wasn’t entirely right for her, and she gradually shifted toward embracing a more natural appearance instead.
Asked about her longevity around her 90th birthday, MacLaine pointed to her lifelong relationship with dance. She began training at age three and continued until roughly 67, crediting it with teaching her discipline, a love of music, and how to work with people and endure pain.
She also credited gratitude, friendship, and good health for keeping her going. In October 2024, she added another chapter to her story with The Wall of Life: Pictures and Stories from This Marvelous Lifetime, a memoir featuring more than 150 personal photos spanning her seven-decade career.
Between a new film role, a reflective memoir, and unhurried lunches by the sea, MacLaine continues to move through her nineties much as she has moved through the decades before them: on her own terms, and clearly still enjoying the view.
