…survival, back to 2007, when the actor sought treatment for an addiction to alcohol he later described as a matter of life or death. That decision, made after roughly thirty years of drinking, would eventually reshape not just his health but the way he saw himself.

A Turning Point in 2007
Goodman has said his drinking had grown steadily more destructive over the decades, affecting his temperament, his memory and his mood. He described the disease’s toll plainly, recalling that it had become “life or death” and that it was simply time to stop.

Seeking treatment that year marked the real beginning of everything that followed. His sobriety would soon become tangled up with another transformation — the way he ate, moved and thought about his own body.

Learning to Eat Differently
By 2010, Goodman had already lost more than 100 pounds. Speaking to People that year, he admitted how much of his life had once revolved around food, calling the old pattern “a waste” of energy he could have spent living better.

He began working with health coach Mackie Shilstone, cutting sugar from his diet and exercising six days a week. Shilstone later explained that Goodman followed a Mediterranean-style plan built around fish, vegetables, fruit, nuts and olive oil, while aiming for roughly 10,000 to 12,000 steps a day.

The trainer was careful to frame it as a gradual process rather than a quick fix. “This didn’t happen overnight — it’s been an ongoing process,” Shilstone said, adding that success this time depended on strategic planning and Goodman’s own genuine commitment.

The Personal Meaning Behind the Change
In a 2016 interview with ABC News, Goodman offered a more candid explanation for the years of yo-yoing that had come before. He admitted he had previously lost 60 or 70 pounds at a stretch, only to reward himself with alcohol and slide back into old habits.

“I was just eating all the time,” he said. “I was just eating alcoholically.” This time, he said, he wanted to slow down, move more, and build energy for work rather than chase a fast result.

He also connected the compulsive eating directly to his drinking, describing both as attempts to fill something missing inside. “I think you’re trying to fill a hole that can’t be filled unless it’s filled with goodness, some kind of spirituality,” he said, adding that real change meant acknowledging the void rather than trying to erase it with food, alcohol or anything else.

Where He Stands Today
By 2023, in an interview with Rolling Stone, Goodman said his total weight loss had reached around 200 pounds. Yet he was honest that his exercise routine had slipped since the pandemic, joking that he had grown “lazy” and leaned mostly on walking his dogs to stay active.

A 2025 report from TODAY found the transformation still holding nearly two decades later. At 73, and despite a hip injury sustained in the U.K., Goodman appeared noticeably slim at the Los Angeles premiere of Smurfs that July.

He has never claimed the journey was perfectly steady. In an earlier interview referenced by TODAY, Goodman joked about the chance of the weight returning, before summing up his real approach in far simpler terms: “It was basically just portion control, and ‘I don’t need it.’”

The August 2026 photo with DeLuise brought all of it back into public view, drawing reactions that were far from unanimous — some praised how different he looked, while others worried he seemed too thin. Looking back on his Roseanne years, Goodman has said his drinking made it hard to fully appreciate the show’s success while he was living it, admitting simply that he wishes he’d valued it more at the time.
